How to Access an Insulin Pump in Australia

At LDE, we help adults explore their options for insulin pump therapy. Below are the ways to access an insulin pump in Australia.

Private Health Insurance

  • Many private health insurance providers cover insulin pumps under the appropriate level hospital cover.

  • Check with your insurer for eligibility, waiting periods, and out-of-pocket costs.

  • Once approved, our healthcare team will guide you through the process of selecting and starting on a pump.

Most insulin pump companies offer a program that allows users to “loan” a pump during their health insurance waiting period.

Self-Funded Purchase

  • If insurance is not an option, insulin pumps can be purchased directly from manufacturers or distributors.

NDSS Subsidy for Consumables

  • The National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) provides subsidised insulin pump consumables, including infusion sets and reservoirs. These consumables are essential for the ongoing use of the insulin pump.

  • Registered NDSS members can access these supplies for approximately $25–$30 per month.

Consultation with Your Healthcare Team

  • Speak with your endocrinologist or diabetes educator to assess your suitability for insulin pump therapy.

  • Our LDE team can help you understand which pump best suits your lifestyle and health needs.

Financial Assistance Programs

  • The Insulin Pump Program through JDRF provides insulin pumps for children and young adults under 21. Financial and clinical eligibility criteria apply

  • While adult-specific funding is limited, it’s worth checking for new or updated initiatives

Next Steps

  1. Check your insurance – confirm coverage and any waiting periods.

  2. Book a consultation – discuss your options with an LDE Diabetes Educator

  3. Plan your transition – our team provides education and ongoing support to help you start on an insulin pump.
